The process of distilling Glen Scotia single malt scotch whisky is one that has stood the test of time.
Our whisky-making process involves two stages of distillation — first in the wash stills and then in the spirit stills — before taking off the pure spirit and adding some more water.
After this, it is ready to enter the oak casks (at 63.5% ABV) and move over to our dunnage warehouse to be aged by the wood of the casks among Campbeltown's coastal weather conditions.
This part of the ageing process is the longest and it allows the whisky to develop its intriguingly complex aroma, rich fruit characteristics, and excellent depth of flavour and finish.
This process ensures that as you enjoy a dram all those years later, each satisfyingly rich sip will engage the senses, revealing layers upon layers of warm spice, vanilla fudge and fruit. Expect ginger biscuits, orange blossom and apricot, all with a silky smooth finish.
During the Victorian era, Campbeltown was known as the Whisky Capital of the World. Teeming with almost 30 operational single malt distilleries at the time, there were oak casks of all types waiting at the ports while single malt scotch whisky virtually ran through the streets.
Almost every person had a connection to the production of the golden spirits.
Glen Scotia is now one of only 3 single malt distilleries left in the once capital and we ensure that all of our whiskies can tell a part of our story in the region's history.
Glen Scotia whisky is made by history because it is made by Campbeltown, its people, and its heritage. Over time, all of that experience, craft and passion has been poured into Glen Scotia and its unique whiskies.
That's why when you pour a dram of Glen Scotia, it's so much more than just the whisky in the glass.
Every Glen Scotia single malt, whether our 15 year old scotch or 25 Year Old Single Malt (named the Best Whisky in the World in 2021), is overseen by our Master Distiller, Iain McAlister.
Born and bred in Campbeltown, he is fiercely proud of the town's rich whisky heritage and is intent on sharing the unique maritime flavours of our single malt scotch whisky expressions with the world.
As a former engineer, Iain ensures that the running of the distillery is as smooth as our 15 year scotch.
Combining his knowledge and expertise with his understanding of the history of Campbeltown, Iain has been able to enhance the distillery production processes without compromising on the craftsmanship and traditional skills that make us who we are.
The malt master says, "The history of both the town and its whisky heritage continues to influence me. It ensures that I, along with the team, am focused on producing only the finest quality whisky, whilst giving all our visitors and guests a trip to remember – after all, it is the whiskiest place I know!"
